How do we 'find God'? There is no single way to God. There is no single method or process for finding God. Finding God is an internal search performed by the heart and mind of the body and the unique personality and soul of the spiritual individual. We are all spiritual - we were spiritualized at our conception, if not sooner! As we seek to realize our connection to God, we proceed on a path or follow some method or process.
Sometimes we follow other people; our parents, friends, religious leaders, educators. Sometimes we follow our heart and mind; we act upon what we perceive as strong feelings urging us to do this or do that. Sometimes we follow or reject what we perceive as spiritual leadings; believing these come directly from God or gods, Jesus Christ, angels or demons. All of these ways or processes become part of our spiritual foundation, leading us to or diverting us from the ultimate task - that of developing a personal relationship with God; who is always right there, dwelling as Spirit within our own spiritual being.
Our connection to God is not related to our relationship with our parents, it cannot be passed on to our children. We are impacted by our parents and we do impact our children with our spirituality; but only you can make a personal, realized connection to God. Once you make this connection, you will enjoy the benefits of seeing God in your parents, in your children, and in all people. This will cause a desire on your part to help them along the path to their own personal, realized connection with God.
Sometimes we make the mistake of trying to force this connection, through rigidness and conformity. This might work for some people, but it's really not a very healthy or progressive model for religious 'conversion'.
The Spirit of God is within. Here on Earth, there appears to be nothing one can do to disconnect completely from the Spirit within. We can try to cover it up or hide from it by avoidance, rejection, withdrawal, or preoccupation with other things (drugs, alcohol, physical sensationalism, work); but it is always there, waiting for us to connect. There are unhealthy, dangerous paths we travel on in order to avoid dealing with the inevitable change that must and will take place in our personalized, spiritualized soul. These unhealthy, dangerous paths will only make the process all the more painful. It's the process that is painful, not the connection; the connection to God is the most glorious, awesome, wonderful thing you will ever experience here on Earth. But only if you are truly connecting to the Spirit within, and not just trying to play along.
The sooner you get on with it, the better!
How does one go about 'getting on with it'? By being receptive to what the Spirit is doing in you and in the world. By incorporating wise spiritual practices into everyday life. By being a righteous (good) person. At Interfaith Spirit Quest, we have come to discover that there are many paths to God, wise individuals from the past have attempted to show us the way. The Wisdom Literature of the ages is the work of real individuals who struggled with issues not too different from our own. Each major religion, philosophy or scientific method has a Core Value and a unique way to express it. We would be wise to tap into this wisdom without getting all caught up in the rigidness and conformity requirements of the particular religious, philosophic or scientific, organizational strains.
God is with you.
